Swedish ophthalmologist.
He contributed to knowledge of the cornea and of astigmatism, improved post-cataract-surgery corrective lenses, and devised the Gullstrand slit lamp, a valuable diagnostic tool for detailed study of the eye. He won a 1911 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for research on the eye as a light-refracting apparatus.
